Aims and Objectives:
Overall Aim: To equip care staff with the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely administer or assist with the administration of medicines to children in residential, domiciliary or similar care settings, in line with current legislation, best practice guidelines and organisationalpolicies, while promoting the rights, dignity and wellbeing of the child.

Learning Objectives:

Identify key legislation, regulatory guidance and organisational policies relating to the safe administration of medication to children.

Recognise different types of medication, their common uses in childrens care and appropriate routes of administration.

Describe procedures for the safe storage, handling and disposal of medicines, including controlled drugs.

Maintain accurate and compliant records, including the use of Medication Administration Record (MAR) charts.

Respond appropriately to medication errors, side effects and adverse reactions, following safeguarding and emergency protocols.

Demonstrate understanding of professional roles, responsibilities and boundaries in administering or assisting with medication.

Apply ethical principles and best practices when dealing with complex scenarios such as refusals, covert medication or shared responsibility with families and professionals.
