Aims and Objectives:
Overall Aim: To enable staff working with children in residential or domiciliary care settings to confidently and competently support the safe administration of medication, including carrying out low-risk administration tasks, recording accurately, recognising errors and working within their responsibilities under relevant guidance and legislation.
Learning Objectives:
Describe their responsibilities and boundaries when supporting or administering medicines at Level 2, including when to seek guidance or escalate concerns.
Identify common types and forms of medication used with children and explain appropriate routes of administration.
Follow safe procedures for administering or assisting with medicines, applying the '5 Rights' and supporting self-administration where appropriate.
Maintain accurate and timely records, including completing MAR charts correctly and reporting any refusals or errors.
Recognise and respond to side effects, allergic reactions and medication errors, in line with workplace procedures.
Work within relevant legal, ethical and regulatory frameworks, including workplace policies and national guidance (e.g. NICE, CQC, Ofsted).
